The Tardigrade or Water Bear is an amazing little creature as you’ll see from this short film. Tardigrades contains a sugary substance called Trehalose which helps protect cell membranes from the extremes of dehydration and freezing. So when the Tardigrade dries out it can live for years in suspended animation. Scientists think that the protective effect of Trehalose (a glucose or sugar) stabilises the cell membranes to form a sugar crystal structure – a bit like glass. When water is then added they come back to life. In the same way as dried Shitake mushrooms do, which also contain, yep you guessed it Trehalose! These amazing properties of Trehalose are key in our range of Thea products at Benjamin’s which help combat the effects of dry eye. Trehalose in the Thealoz range protects the cells in the cornea to prevent them drying out. And using Thealoz has been proven to rapidly and effectively improve your tear film quality. As the human race, we will probably never outlive the amazing little Tardigrade, but sharing their use of Trehalose can at least help with our dry eye problems!
